The Downtown Aquarium opened in 2003 and is located on a six-acre site at 410 Bagby Street in Downtown Houston. It was once home to Houston’s Historic Central Waterwork Building, which was built in the late 1800’s and was used to pump water from the Buffalo Bayou for Houston Residents and the local Fire Stations to utilize.
The Downtown Aquarium houses over 200 species of aquatic life in 500,000 gallons of water. The Shark Voyager is an exciting and immersive exhibit. This exhibit takes visitors on a train through an underwater journey through a 200,000 gallon shark tunnel. Visitors can experience the thrill of being surrounded by
sharks swimming above and around them. The tunnel is made of a clear acrylic material that is over 5 inches thick and supporting more than 700 tons of water. There are several different species of sharks in the exhibit.
BETCO provided access over the shark tank to allow our client access to clean, repair and restore coatings on the rafters of the building while allowing the exhibit to remain open for visitors. BETCO conducted stand-down meetings every morning to discuss potential hazards, protective methods and rescue plans in case of an accident. Keeping our team and the sharks safe was our top priority. BETCO used Ring system scaffold and metal grating due to the versatility of the equipment, to erect the scaffold. The availability of different size ledgers, allowed our team to install bays in sizes that minimized obstructing our client to reach their work surfaces
